North Florida Council completed 2014 National Youth Leadership Training

Screen Shot 2014-08-05 at 9.51.56 AM

North Florida Council completed another successful National Youth Leadership Training at Brownsea Island at Camp Shands – Baden-Powell Scout reservation. 107 years after the first Brownsea Island, UK campout organized by Baden-Powell, a week of youth leadership camping was completed in sunny North Florida. Scouts and venturers are now ready to return to their troops and crews to apply new skills. Besides, the new set of tools are also useful for their schools, bands, churches, youth groups, and life. Leaders. For Life.

The National Youth Leadership Training program is an intensive week-long summer experience for upper-ranking scouts, venturers, and sea scouts. Each participant works through a week of indoor and outdoor challenges, with the mentoring of the highly skilled youth staff. Participants are equipped with the basic skills necessary to become leaders in their troops, crews, ships, communities, and future professions.

During the seven days, program will range from geocaching to knots instruction, sports games, realistic first aid practice, overnight backpacking trips, interpatrol competitions and campfires. Each part of the program is carefully prepared and used as a hands-on tool to teach fundamental leadership concepts. An orientation at the beginning of the week and a graduation ceremony at the end round out the experience. Visit www.nfcnylt.org for details and like our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/nfcnylt)

The Trail to Troop Leadership Training

(As commented in Wood Badge FB group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/2216598259)).

Start doing ILST in your troop, then take them to NYLT (13), make graduates do their personal vision and goals to teach and serve within troop. Motivate them to go back to NYLT as staff (14,15,16). Some of them should go to NAYLE (15,16). Like our FB page NFC NYLT National Youth Leadership Training for pictures.

Our scouts elect a new SPL and PLs each 6 months and they know that they have to elect wisely. SPL picks their ASPLs and troop officers. Exercising these jobs are great for youth leadership practice. A boy-led troop only needs the EDGE method with adults Guiding and Enabling and less Demonstrating and Explaining. Let the boys do the Explaining and Demonstrating. I will post this in my blog (www.scoutingadventures.org) and FB page at Scouting Adventures

Since its establishment in 1980, the NYLT program has built a strong legacy of service and leadership. An NYLT is now held in almost every scout Council across the nation; the course for youth in the North Florida Council is held each summer at Camp Shands in Hawthorne, FL.
